Main Floor Renovation: Moving the Kitchen and Reimagining Everyday Living

On this project, our homeowners wanted more than a new kitchen. They wanted their main floor to feel connected, functional, and tailored to how they actually live and entertain. Bosch Services reworked the layout, moved the kitchen, refreshed key rooms, and tied everything together so the home now feels cohesive from the front door through to the main living space.

This is the kind of carefully planned main floor renovations we complete for homeowners all across Burlington, Oakville, Milton, and Waterdown; where layout, finishes, storage, and lighting all work together, not in isolation.

Relocating the kitchen for a better layout

Originally, the kitchen sat in the center of the home. For this renovation, we moved the kitchen into what used to be the formal dining room and created a clear separation between cooking, dining, and living. That one decision changed how the entire main floor functions.

The new kitchen features a split finish. The wall cabinets are one colour for a clean, bright backdrop, while the island is finished in warm walnut for contrast and character. This gives the homeowners a visually grounded focal point in the space without overwhelming the room.

To make the new layout work, we opened up the wall between the former kitchen and the family room. This let us connect the new kitchen to the main living area so that cooking, conversation, and entertaining now happen in the same flow.

Creating a more defined living area

In the original layout, the front of the home had an adjoined living room and dining room that didn't fully support how the family wanted to use the space. By moving the kitchen and adding a dividing wall, we were able to create a separate living area with its own purpose and feel.

The curved walls at the front of the home were existing architectural features the homeowners wanted to keep. Instead of removing them, we treated them as an asset. A family member had previously completed a wall finish the owners were attached to, so we carefully dressed and modified the curves to suit the new design while respecting that original work.

At the foyer, we retiled and redefined the entry to create a more natural transition into a den-type space. This gives the homeowners a quiet area at the front of the home that feels intentional, rather than just leftover space from a former layout.

Refreshing the powder room and laundry

Smaller rooms can have a big impact on how a main floor feels day to day. As part of this renovation, we updated the two-piece bathroom with a new toilet, floor, vanity, sink, and faucet, and added a feature wall behind the vanity to give the room a focal point and some personality.

The laundry room was fully renovated as well. We added a proper closet, relocated the washer and dryer, and installed a countertop over the machines. This turns what was once a purely utility space into a more usable, organized room that still fits within the overall design of the main floor.

A family room built for gathering

At the heart of the home, the main living space now functions as a true family room. We installed a new gas fireplace and built-ins on either side, which gives the room a strong anchor point and much-needed storage for everyday living.

On one side, we created a servery-style area with two under-counter fridges, one for wine and one for cold beverages, along with glass-front cabinets and featured lighting. This makes it easy to serve guests and grab drinks without interrupting the cooking zone, while the lighting adds warmth and depth to the room.

From finishes to storage, every part of this family room is designed to support how the homeowners use the space, whether that's a quiet evening by the fireplace or hosting a larger gathering.

Tying the main floor together

What makes this project work isn't just any one room. It's how each area, including the kitchen, living room, foyer, den, powder room, and laundry, ties together into a single, coherent main floor.

  • The kitchen move created a better relationship between cooking, dining, and living.
  • The new dividing wall and den space brought more structure to the front of the home.
  • The updated powder room and laundry elevated high-use spaces that are often overlooked.
  • The family room now has a clear focal point with the fireplace and built-ins, plus practical entertaining storage.

For us, this is what a well-executed main floor remodel should do. It should improve the flow, enhance daily routines, and make the home feel like it was always meant to be this way.
